what happened?!!
Mood:  loud
Topic: HTML Questions
I got hit with "sidebar". I can't even get into my site - www.columbiaflywayshow.com. Got a message from Angelfire that said screw you - pay us $4.95/mo if you want to see your site. isn't that called blackmail? weren't they getting their bucks with all the banners and popups my clients have to put up with? does anyone have a phone number for angelfire I can call? I can't find a number. Is there a site I can go to and file a complaint for host abuse?

The sidebar is known to not work right on a handful of rare browsers. What browser and version are you using? (I you know how, can you tell us what the UserAgent is?)

If your browser behaves itself and doesn't lie about what it is (some, sadly, do), we fix it so you don't get the sidebar at all.

I get to internet thru Juno (version 5.0 (build33). I have IE version 5.00.2014.0216. not sure what a UserAgent is. where do I find that info? I can open the site in webshell edit mode and view it but if I click on a link it goes to "sidebar". I understand reasoning for using sidebar but shouldn't it let folk into the site after they click on the address? that is what is crazy here. it just continually bounces back to sidebar. Sidebar fills up my whole 17" screen so there is no x to click on. don't know if we need all this posted on the blog. can we talk on my email?

MyIE2 (http://www.myie2.com/html_en/home.htm) is one of browsers that do not display sidebar properly. And since in all other regards it's *much* better than standard IE, I'd rather not ditch it, even if it means no Angelfire for me.

But I've tried to access my site with IE 5.5, and it's still not well. The sidebar pops up immediately, the ad banner does as well. The actual index page (very short, no frames, no tables and no graphics at all, so what's so difficult) takes a minute and a half before ever starts displaying. What's worse, the IE's status bar shows "Done" as soon as the sidebar is on, so if you don't know better, you may get an impression that it's all and no actual page is going to be displayed. Also, I can turn off sidebar by pressing X on Search pane (as suggested), but as soon as I click any of sub-pages, the sidebar pops up again.

Another bug: when going to a sub-page, the link on the sidebar does not have "/" between path and file name.

I use the latest version of IE with Avant upgrade. Also have the WalMart (AOL?) browser because that is my ISP but I don't use it once connected because it sucks ass.

Having all those problems the other posters are saying. I noticed this as did the last poster:

"Another bug: when going to a sub-page, the link on the sidebar does not have "/" between path and file name."

That is probably what is causing the "page not found error page". That is just part of the problem, but that would be a starting point for fixing all of these bugs.

What is kind of funny is this side bar thing acts like the "bad content blocker" that the libraries use around here (I use to go there before I got a new computer). It blocks a lot of stuff that it shouldn't too. It thinks Angelfire is porn half the time. Angelfire isn't porn, just a big pain in the ass ... LOL.

the sidebar does not work with Advant browser. It is not an upgrade to IE6
Advant is just an IE based type browser.

the sidebar has know issues with IE based browsers such as Juno, SBC, Opera ETC ETC...

Tripod fixed it so the sidebar does not show up with AOL and MSN because it was the only way to fix it....

Netscape and netscape based browsers like mozilla work fine and without the sidebar......

so what I hear you all saying is - if I pay the $60/yr the site will work fine in any browser and if I don't - well, move.

I have problems with the same site in NS7.02. The page never stops loading then disappears. Think it's due to the numerous html errors on the page.

tr- even if you decide to move you need to validate your html. As is, it will cause problems for some visitors. Most errors look like simple pasting/editting errors created as you built .... easy enough for anyone to do while laboring over a page :). Your meta tags are in the wrong part of the html doc and there are missing or unexpected tags all over the place.

btw- turn your background gif into a jpg. It's complex pattern and shading makes it better suited for that format. You'll probably drop at least 40K off the file size.

I guess that's about the gist of it but IMHO if your finances are limited you might have been better off upgrading the account than spending the money on a domain name.

Please see my other comment above about some html problems at your site.

Wherever you end up, good luck with the show :).

hi dalleh- Check some of the image file sizes being used there. That's an almost 20 MB page. Considering hourly BW limits, is that even possible to load from a free account?

howdy CW, thanks for the tips, appreciate it. client bought the domain. waiting to see if client wants to fork over the $60 also or move it. haven't had anyone complain about not seeing the site before and I was new when I made it. BTW, how did you look at the code if I can't get into the site? Using one of the browsers others are mentioning?

Netscape 7 is my browser of choice but I keep several different browsers for checking my sites. Sidebar script isn't written for Netscape yet so doesn't interfere.

If you need an html validator try the free online one at Dr. Watson... link above.

hi dalleh- with NS7.02mac the only one I'm having a little trouble with is the last one... vamp/mistress_tiffee/. The page never stops loading and the footer ad doesn't appear. Again probably due to an html error- a missing closing body tag.
