how to uninstall sidebar
Mood:  happy
Lycos just sent me the following instructions on how to uninstall the sidebar search tool. Hope it works for you (I've upgraded, which solved the prob).
1) In the address bar of your browser, please type in the following:

clear search version

Note: You can find the address bar at the top of your Internet Explorer
or Netscape browser. Make certain you are placing a single space
between "clear" and "search" as well as between "search" and "version".
There is no space after "version".

2) Once you have typed in "clear search version" in your browser's
address bar, hit the "Enter" key on your keyboard.
You will see information that will determine how you will proceed.

3) Look for the line of text that states "Promo Code". If the Promo
Code = 86 or 78, you will need to uninstall Lycos Sidesearch.
------------------------------------
Uninstall Directions for Sidesearch:
-Click START -> SETTINGS -> CONTROL PANEL.
-Open the "ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS" icon.
-Click on "Lycos Sidesearch."
-Click on the "ADD/REMOVE..." button and follow any on-screen
instructions.
-Restart your computer when the process is complete.
-------------------------------------

4) If the Promo Code is something other than 86 or 78, or there is no
information next to the Promo Code, then you will need to determine the
partner that has installed Lycos.

-------------------------------------
The Partner can be determined by following these steps:

-In your browser, type in an invalid web address, such as
wwww.lycos.com.
-Lycos Search Results will appear.
-Take a look at the web address in your address bar and look for
"src=clear" (Clear Search)
--------------------------------------
Uninstall instructions for Clear Search:
-Close all but one browser window.
-Type in the following URL into the address bar of the one open browser:
http://www.clear-search.com/Software/ClrSchUninstall.exe
-Follow the on-screen instructions.
-Restart your computer when the uninstall process is complete.
--------------------------------------

This is for Lycos Sidesearch and has nothing to do with the Angelfire sidebar. Sidesearch is an application that you can install to add a search interface to your browser, similar to toolbars offered by Google and other engines.

There isn't a way to "uninstall" the Angelfire sidebar because it doesn't actually install anything on your computer.

So is angelfire going to get rid of this irritating sidebar JP??

The Angelfire staff is listening to both user (you-- the page builders) and visitor (the random people in the world that browse your pages) feedback about the sidebar and will be making decisions based on that. The intention of the sidebar is to make Angelfire a better place for visitors to find information-- we want to make the site a better place, not a worse one.

The sidebar's only been out a couple of days. We have some feedback already on things that should be fixed and some ideas on how to make better the system in general. There definately will be some big changes in the near future which I think will make it better -- probably not removing it altogether, but maybe allowing a limited opt-out or something -- but specifics haven't been determined yet and will be based on feedback.

Our feedback thus far is that builders are unhappy about the sidebar, but external visitors seem to like it. Maybe it should refresh less often or be tweaked in other ways, but that's the feedback thus far. If you have any feedback on how you think we could improve it, if it can be improved, please feel free to respond here or email me.

I think most users would be happy if the sidebar were made an option, if it isn't going to be removed altogether. You claim that visitors to Angelfire sites seem to like it. Well, I can tell you that the parents of youngsters who visit my site DON'T like it, because it brings up pornographic links and links to pages like "how to build a bong," etc. My family-friendly pages have absolutely nothing to do with any of those topics. I know I don't like it because it is an annoyance that keeps popping up on every page, pushing my images and text out of place. This sidebar basically places content on my page without my consent, which I do not appreciate.

My site won't come up at all because of the side bar. It starts to come up then the side bar takes it's place. Why is it called a side bar when it is a full page ? The links in it don't even work. Angelfire is trying to take the traffic that I have developed and make money off of it. I can understand the banner ads but free web space or not they should not be able to redirect someone away from what they intended to enter. Just do away with the free sites all together instead of playing the games that have been played over the last month or two. Before this there was the ads covering up parts of the site, before that the stack over flow problem. And for those who will say just up grade to paid service, well people will start out with the 4.95 plan then Angelfire will decide they are not making enough with that and start playing with it and taking options away from it to get you to upgrade AGAIN to a higher priced package. They are irritating the heck out of me for free. I am not going to pay them to irritate me. I am getting paid service, but sure as heck not with Angelfire. Should rename the service to www.SatanFire.com

Well, add me to the bunch of unhappy. *Extremely* unhappy ones, that is. In my browser, sidebar is the only thing that shows, no page whatsoever. I can't even preview my edited page in the webshell, sidebar intercepts everything. I don't know who are those external visitors who like it, but I'm already getting feedback from people who can't see my page and think it's my fault.

When I first started my homepage on Angelfire, it had simple looks and easy access, which fit me perfectly well. Now it has none. Possibilities can "make the site a better place". Intrusive service can only make it worse.

Add me to the unhappy ones as well. Many people have told me my site won't come up either, as the sidebar completely takes its place, Making it an option to either have it or not have it would be great.

I too am very unhappy with this sidebar. My site wont' show up at all either. However whats weird is its not on all my angelfire accounts. I probably shouldn't say that, LOL..........but all I want is to be able to see my sites. I have put in alot of time making them and now no one can enjoy them

I also cannot enter my site because of sidebar. can someone give me a phone number to call angelfire? I can't find a number. I did get a message that said pay us $4.95 if you want to see your site. in my opinion their advertisement for a free site is false advertisement. is there a site to file complaints?

Name: This is a bunch of crap ! ! !

All of my pages are blocked by the side pane. The links in the side pane either don't work or goto other pages blocked by side panes as well. When is Angelfire going to fix this. How is this any good for anyone, including Angelfire. My traffic is just being wasted ! Also, people who normally visit my site on a regular basis and have my email, are emailing me complaining about the site always being down, and it is not me it is stupid Angelfire !!! I would think this kind of stuff would piss off the paid advertisers that pay for Angelfire to run their banners and pop ups too, it makes everyone look unprofessional. Don't they test this stuff before they deploy it on the whole system ?

I am extremely annoyed with the new 'sidebar' feature. I think a previous poster put it just right: I have worked very hard for years to build up web traffic to my site, and this sidebar is trying to redirect that traffic to other sites for Angelfire's own greedy purposes. They just don't get it, do they? NO ONE likes this feature. Angelfire claims that they don't want to make the webpage building experience a negative one, so WHY is the sidebar still here? Is it really generating more money for them? Money is the only thing that seems to matter to Angelfire, so lets talk money: the sidebar is not a paid ad, so no ad revenue. It won't make free users upgrade to a paid account, because free users are leaving Angelfire as fast as their transloaders can carry them. The sidebar is blocking access to Angelfire pages, so the advertisers who have ads on Angelfire sites aren't getting any money, either. Who is winning? Do the sites that appear on the sidebar pay for the priviledge? Maybe that's the scam. Maybe a call to the Better Business Bureau is in order.

it appears to me that the boogy external visitors should be extremely happy with sidebar since that is all they are going to see when they visit my site. if they are not woodcarvers - they are not going to visit my site anyway. none of the sidebar info has any relationship to woodcarving so they aren't going to go to those sites either. I think someone has pulled the wool over your eyes, jp. Angelfire staff could give a rip about page builders. why stick with a sidebar? since no one can see a site as it covers the whole page, why not put bars in the whole page and make use of that dead space? then your phantom external visitors will be extremely happy to have more choices to waste their time on. sure bet you are loosing a lot of bucks from advertisers since most folk are leaving angelfire now. was a good host site while it lasted.

since sidebar didn't start until June, it won't appear on your other accounts unless you do an update of somekind then you can kiss that site goodby to your viewers.
