Microsoft Office
Now Playing: How to use Word/PowerPoint to create pages
Topic: FrontPage
Does anyone here know how I can use web pages created by either Microsoft Word and/or Microsoft PowerPoint on Angelfire?  I can create them and upload them to my directory, but when I open themall I get is code rather than the web page I created.  Help!

Fav Icon
Mood:  not sure
Now Playing: Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
Anyone know how to do (or why won't Angelfire let me do) a favicon in Angelfire? I know I have the coding right and it works in my internet browsers when I preview in Dreamweaver; but when I uploaded it to Angelfire it wouldn't work...

Trying to link to an erroneous web address revisited
Mood:  d'oh
Topic: HTML Questions

   You're right, I didn't see that...None of the links were correct--as I copied and pasted they had somehow lost the php? and were replaced with ...

   I corrected them, but they still don't work right. Now it will actually go to the CCCturtle.org website (where before I just got the Error 404 message) but there on CCCturtle.org it says "page not found". However, I KNOW that page still exists because you can go directly to www.cccturtle.org and click a link on any of those sea turtles and the page will come up fine then.

   As I said before, I've noticed that this very same link does not work on any other website, I have to go directly there from cccturtle.org's home page. I can't even type the address into my web browser's address bar. Could there be some type of security blocking me?

Loooking for Angelfire's dynamic post URL for Feedburner's FeedFlare
Adding Feedburner's FeedFlare

I have started using FeedFlare, looks pretty cool. To make it work, you need to add a script tag at the bottom of each post. This is what they specify:

<script src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~s/At-homeDadNewsletter?i=POST-URL-HERE" type="text/javascript" charset="utf-8"></script>

How do I get the dynamic post URL to replace "POST-URL-HERE" in the src?

 They give examples for Blogger (<$BlogItemPermalinkURL$> and for Moveable Type (<$MTEntryPermalink$>

 But they don't give an exmaple for Angelfire's Blog Builder (I use the premium service) . What do I need to specify here?

Any help would be apprecieated!

- Pete

Re: Trying to link to erroneous web address
Mood:  quizzical
Topic: HTML Questions

   Yeah, I do have the http:// in there. But I'm not trying to merely link to the top page, there is a separate page for each kind of sea turtle...Here's an example: For the hawksbill turtle I link to this page:

<a href="http://cccturtle.org/sea-turtle-info...page=hawksbill">

and for the green marine turtle I link to this page:

<a href="http://cccturtle.org/sea-turtle-info...php?page=green">

   I copied those addresses and pasted them directly out of the address bar in IE so they would be correct, but they don't work unless I go directly to CCCturtle's website and click. They don't work where they're linked to on other websites either. I've noticed here it's all on one line but in Webshell it is broken and wraps around.

Trying to link to an erroneous web address
Mood:  quizzical
Topic: HTML Questions
   On my turtle resources and advice/turtle encyclopedia page, in the part about sea turtles, I have a link for more info. These links are supposed to go to the CCCturtle.org site, but they don't work. I suspect the reason for it is that the address is wrong, it doesn't have .html or whatever at the end of it. But I actually went to those web pages myself and copied and pasted the address out of the address bar, so the mistake is not me...What do I do now to make it work?

GuestGear users - now with less spam
Mood:  a-ok
Topic: News

Howdy - For those of you who have an HTML Gear GuestGear, you may notice that we've automatically removed a number of spam comments from you guestbook. Thanks to the fine work by JP and others here at Angelfire, we were able to successfully identify and remove the spam without deleting legit comments.

Much harder to do than it sounds, given all of the permutations - but well figured and tested. That said, if you find that some legit comments have been deleted from your GuestGear, please file a ticket with the Help Desk. So far, we've had no false positives reported, but we'll address any that are brought to our attention.

Thanks.

-Jamie

Thanks much and picture problem
Mood:  a-ok
Topic: HTML Questions

   Thanks so much... The turtle link I spoke of is working now. I don't know what happened--I didn't touch it--but it was down for awhile but is fine now. And thanks for noticing my meta tags. That fixed another problem I was having before I asked about it!  No idea how the ?lpt;<...>? got there as I simply copied and pasted the tags, but...There they were.

   Now I've got one more thing...On my home page I have a picture of a zebra... That shows up fine on a desktop computer, but when a friend tried to view it on her sidekick she said she only saw the box where the pic was supposed to be and the label about the Quagga that I had under it--there was no pic of a zebra there. She said she had never seen anything like that before because her sidekick usually shows web pages and pictures just fine. So I was wondering if this is normal because it's a cell phone with a tiny screen or if there's some adjustment I need to make so the pic will show up on all computers?

What's going on with my site???!
Mood:  irritated
Topic: HTML Questions

   It seems like my links have suddenly stopped working. For example, when I go to my home page and then click on the Turtle care, advice, resources, & psychology link (exact wording?), I get the angel fire 404 error. I know it is linked to correctly, the file is still there, and it was working fine up to today. What happened? I have not changed that part of my index.html file...

   Also I added the "My contact info" link to a couple other pages (the turtle care page which is currently down and the books page) and I think they're properly linked to, but not sure as they aren't working either...

Blog Comments Posting Problem

I created a blog today to attach to my website. After making the first post, I tried to post a comment in the comments section, just to test that feature and make sure it was working. But nothing I click on in the Comments box will do anything. When I click on the Comments link, the box does come up on the screen, and the comment can be entered into the box.  But clicking on either the "Preview" or "Submit" button does nothing. The comment can't be previewed or posted. Only the Cancel button works (the comment box goes away).

I tried testing the Comments function both logged in and not logged in (I want non-Angelfire members to be able to post comments), but neither worked.

Does anybody know what might cause this kind of problem?

(I tried to edit the post to note that the comment section isn't working yet, but the site then eliminated the whole post.)

linking to files in a different folder
Mood:  lazy
Topic: HTML Questions
I know the basics of linking to a file, but got stuck on this one...I keep missing little things *wink* Anyway, I have a sounds subfolder and a books subfolder in my main turtlestruebiz folder. I want to have a file inside my books subfolder link to a file inside my sounds subfolder..... I know how to link to a file in a subfolder inside the folder the file is in, but how do I make the link go up one level? For example, instead of going from turtlestruebiz to books (in which case I'd link to it as books/file.html) I need to go from books to turtlestruebiz and over to a different subfolder. How would I write that?

Background sounds
Mood:  energetic
Topic: HTML Questions

Allright, I've uploaded all my sound files into their own "sounds" folder as .wav files. I pasted the code

<EMBED SRC="tune.mid" HIDDEN="True" loop="1">
<BGSOUND SRC="tune.mid" loop="1">

into my webpage as instructed, and it's working, but it isn't exactly what I want. Apparently this is code for background music, but as background music can drown out the sound of a screen reader reading my web page to blind people, I would never use this on my site. What I want is for a short clip of sound to play once or twice as the page loads. For example, I have a picture of a Quagga zebra on my home page. I want people visiting my home page to hear the sound of a zebra's whinny once or twice, and then it'd be silent. Can I do that?
