It doesn't appear to be in your main directory

https://www.angelfire.com/musicals/dvdmovies/grandparent_day.wmv
maybe it is in another directory?

and be sure that you have the file named correctly and exactly written as the file name, and be sure the uploaded file itself has the proper extension on it .wmv
and that you are pointing it to the correct folder(directory) in the web shell.

I tried loading your movie directly into media player with the url in your code and it's not there.....
so it's either pointing to the wrong dierctory or the file name is not exact

where is the movie file located in your web shell, is it in the main directory or a sub-directory? such an image directory or a video directory etc... do you see the file as soon as the webshell opens? or do you have to open another directory to get to it?

leave the file name of your video file here so we can look at it, and let us know where is it is in your web shell directory...

here's an idea when you click on the file right directly from your web shell directory it should open and play in windows media player on your computer correct?
so now then in your windows media player when your playing it...click on the movie title and right click the file now playing and view the properties, you will see the url of the file there, highlight and paste that url into the code when you edit your embed code.....

I hope that you will post the url here so that we can see where the file is....LOL....

you are sure that it is uploaded to your webshell directory, correct? and that it's not just playing for your computer, because if it's on your computer and not uploaded to angelfire only you will be able to view it

I have see that happen and it can be a common mistake.....

I think your file is uploaded to the right place and your file path looks good. I can download your 5.8 MB file from it's location at https://www.angelfire.com/musicals/dvdmovies/Grandparent_Day.wmv
- but can't play it because I don't use Windows Media Player. That may be your problem as well- you may need to embed a plug in to play the file or assign an application to open the file in your browser.
I've never embedded large media files like that so not sure. Mamagoo can give you better guidance.

One thing I'd suggest is not to embed that file at all. Offer it as an optional download instead ( via a text link) so visitors can choose to see it or not. It's too large to be used as an embedded file especially on your index page, and too large to allow many hits to your index page and thus your site with the bandwidth alloted to free accounts. 1 GB of bandwidth breaks down to about 33 MB/day. That means about 5 downloads/day of that 5.8 MB file and not much more. Hard to make a go of an e-business with only 5 hits a day. JMHO :).

What is a embed a plug in to play the file or assign an application to open the file in your browser.

If I do not do it with a windows media player can you please tell me how to do it an other way?

Do you have any idles for me, on how to do it

ok that is the problem, your file is named incorrectly in your html code....

the file name in your embedded player code is not the same as your file name you posted here......
edit your embedded code and use the correct file name and you will be all set....

file names are case sensitive your file name has a upper case G on grandparent you are using the lower case g in your code. here is the file name in your url code
https://www.angelfire.com/musicals/dvdmovies/grandparent_Day.wmv

it should be
https://www.angelfire.com/musicals/dvdmovies/Grandparent_Day.wmv

now secondly:
you do not have a media player set as a default player, evidently, so when (you) view your site it is telling you that you need to assign media player as your default player... and that is easy to do.

if you want to view the player on your web page
you have to open windows media player go to the menu and choose

Tools-Options - file types, and in file types be sure that the file extension wmv is checked.....

or if your using winxp you can go to the control panel and go to the add and remove option there, open it and in the next widow on the left hand side menu choose 'set program access and defaults' you will be able to assign your default media player from there, also .....

With the correct fiile name, I was able to downloaded your movie and it is almost 6mb that is a big file to be playing on a web page......

I think cw is right, it may be your best bet to write a text link to your video instead, so that your visitors can click on the link and it will download and view to their computer instead of viewing it on the web page......

so get that file named correctly in the html code and you will be okay....

I chance the Grandparent upper case G.

I do have the file in wmv
But I still do not know how to set as a default player

So how do you do a text link to your video instead, so that your visitors can click on the link and it will download and view to their computer instead of viewing it on the web page...... I will try any thing

Thanks for all your help

Your movie is playing on your web page now because you changed the file name, but let me tell you that it took a few minutes even on my braodband cable connection for your movie to download and to begin playing on your web page, Helen. 7mb is a large large file for downloading.....

let me tell yout that people on dial-up modems it will take forever to download

probably close to an hour or even more....

You may have to optimize again for a smaller file size, Helen, or just use a portion of the movie as the sample video and not the whole movie..... I can get you 50% of your movie but I have no way of optimizing the whole movie smaller.

by the way the movie is well done and you do good work, but maybe all you need is a sneak preview and not the whole thing.

There are applications that you can use to optimize file size of movies but the

quality suffers..... if your site is going to be using many videos those large file sizes are going to eat up your directory diskspace and use a lot of bandwidth...

so it may be worth your while to invest in a movie converter application and the best type of file to use is mpeg and not wmv...mpeg is a more friendly type of file and be a smaller file size..... and can be played it most any type of media players.....
------
here is the code for a text link though, just so you know how to do it:

you could use this html code. copy this and paste it to
your page in place of the embedded player code html that you have now:

<a href="href="https://www.angelfire.com/musicals/dvdmovies/Grandparent_Day.wmv">https://www.angelfire.com/musicals/dvdmovies/Grandparent_Day.wmv">
Sample
Video- Grandparent Day</a><br> (6mb) Downloads to Windows Media Player

Name: mamagoo again and again....

Helen,
I have to clear up a statement I made in the above post....

.mpeg is not really a smaller file size. both formats depend on how they are optimized and configured....
so stick with .wmv as that will be your better format for what your doing.....ok? I got 50% of your movie copied and got it down to a 4mb wmv file....(but that is only half the movie and the chopped quality is the same.....

and btw, your movie is almost 6mb I thought it was almost 7mb...but either way they are both large....LOL

best of luck to you
cheers

Helen,
The video still looks pretty darn good and you cut the file to 3mb. good job!

I am not a video expert by no means so all I do is observe and experiment...LOl
if your using pinnacle Studio, from what I read it is a very good application.
When you save your video with pinnacle do you have choices on how to save it, like at different compression or frequency rates for web use for downloading or anything like that?

actuallly the best formats for streaming video is .wmv and .rm(real media for real player) forget I even mentioned mpeg. mpeg is more for the finished product and
the file size would be to large......

I used a conversion application, Videozilla, it's free to download and I got 9 free conversions to try it out.
http://www.videozilla.net/

I converted your new short video, the one you have there now,
I kept the format as .wmv, but I used the setting to save it as video for broadband 256Kbps and the file is down to 1.38mb, but the quality suffers just a bit.
go here for the links:I uploaded the video for you check it out:
http://phoenixdesign48040.tripod.com/testpage/videol_links.html

there is also a link there to your video in the Real Player format (.rm) that one will open in real player if you have it installed on your computer and it is also 1.38mb....
sometimes it's good to offer both formats, real player and media player are the two most popular streaming players.....

see what you think. but the 3mb one you have there now is much faster to download then the 6mb one you had before...but yes it still takes time on a dial-up connection

are you on dial-up or broadband, Helen?
I am going away tomorrow for the week-end so I won't be to the blog for a few days...

best of luck to you

Thank so much. I think I might buy the software you sent me. Now do you know how to start my counter

Helen,
your very welcome. I bet that small one you saved from my directory uploaded much faster to...LOL.

you didn't say whether your on dial-up modem or highspeed broadband...

your counter is working on my end right now but the counter still tends to work irraticly at times.....
you may want to try a 3rd party counter. I have been using this one for years and you can get your web stats along with it. you can also set it up so that they e-mail you weekly to show how many times your page has been viewed for the week...

http://sitemeter.com

after you set it up with them, you copy their code and paste to your site......

Not sure what your meaning here, Helen.

r u saying you signed up with sitemeter, and the code script your using is coming out as code on your page and not the sitemter counter?

the script you get after you set up your sitemeter does not have numbers in it and is about 7 lines of java text script....
it sounds like your not using the java script code but something else, the scripts starts with this
<!--WEBBOT bot="HTMLMarkup" startspan ALT="Site Meter" -->
and ends with this
<!--WEBBOT bot="HTMLMarkup" Endspan -->

you have to sign up with sitemeter and get a user name and password then set up your preferences to how you want it to look and work....after your account is set up you will get the script for your site then paste that java script to your web page and if you add more pages to your site you can use that same script on all the pages.

the sitemeter counter should be visible on your site you will see the the number of hits your pages get...
and then if you go back to your sitemeter.com account you will be able to view the statistics of those visitors hits....
