Upgrading site
Mood:  irritated

(I entered a support ticket about this, but I have the feeling I might get a faster response here.) I decided to upgrade my Neon account to the Argon level. I signed into my account, clicked on the "upgrade" option, selected the plan I want, and then the page that comes up wants to assign me a completely new URL based on a completely different user name! I don't want a new URL, I just want to upgrade my service at the URL (www.angelfire.com/anime2/nephandnaru) I already have! Plus there's all this business, depending on what "upgrade" link you click, with Lycos User Aliases and all these other different member names that I don't know what they are and what I'm supposed to enter.

 Grrrr.

If someone can tell me, in very easy-to-understand terms, how I can upgrade the website I already have, with the member name and URL I already have, I would appreciate it. (You'd think that if Angelfire wants us to give them more of our money, they'd make it easier and less confusing!)

More info: the Angelfire system apparently thinks I'm signing up for a new account. Maybe I accidentally did this while I was trying to figure out which bleepity-bleep member name/user name/user alias they were asking for. Why can't I just upgrade the account I already have?

On the other hand, the user name they want to give me isn't one that I used at any time during this process. It's part of my e-mail address.

Hmmm. Why is this so confusing?

I've discussed your issue with the head of Angelfire's development team. He believes that your account has a weird bug that is being triggered when you try and upgrade. If you like, I'll credit your account for the upgrade this weekend, while we wait for the developers to fix the problem. (It seems to be affecting accounts created around the same time yours was.)

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Thanks for the response. It must be a very weird bug indeed. I thought the whole system had gone crazy (or maybe I had gone crazy). I've put a lot of work into my site, it's gotten quite big and it has a lot of visitors and is linked in a lot of places, and I would hate for anything to mess it up.

If you mean, go ahead and do the upgrade while the developers figure out what's wrong with the sign-up and billing process, that would be good. I appreciate it.

Great, I'll go ahead and upgrade you temporarily now.

We have an engineer working over the weekend on this and he's fixed the problem. But for fear of causing other problems by accident, we're going to not do the real fix until sometime Monday when we've had a chance to test it and make sure we didn't break something else unexpectedly.

Thank you - the upgrade went through, and my site seems to be working properly. I appreciate your help. :)

The bug has been fixed now and you should be able to upgrade normally. I'll reverse the "comp" once you upgrade yourself. (Or in a couple of days, if you decide not to do it.)

Let me know if you have any additional problems.

No, it's still treating me like my user name is "moon_momma" (which is my e-mail address, I never entered it as a user name at any time during this process) and wants to assign me a new URL, www.angelfire.com/moon_momma. This is while I am logged in under my real user name, anime2/nephandnaru, and trying to upgrade from my existing account page.

Still isn't working right.

More info: "moon_momma" might be a user name I used a while back when I started a blog over at Tripod, but I don't remember and it isn't the user name I use for that blog. Angelfire/Tripod/Lycos asks for way too many user names, and I can never remember which is what and what I'm using them for.

That still doesn't explain why Angelfire wants to sign me up for a new URL when I'm trying to upgrade the one I already have. I've pretty much decided to not do the upgrade and to just stay with the Neon level service that I already have.

Weird. One of our engineers even test-upgraded your site today, to see if it would work, and he didn't have this problem. I've sent your note along to him and hopefully we will get an answer to this puzzling question soon.

It's working now, and I was able to do the upgrade. :D Thanks to everyone who helped get this straightened out!
